News From West Witton

Ferdy Murphy is already looking forward to challenging for top two-mile chase honours with Kalahari King next season.

The Arkle runner-up and Maghull Chase winner stepped out of novice company with a creditable second to the much more experienced Twist Magic in the Celebration Chase at Sandown on Saturday. The run was all the more meritorious as Kalahari King pulled muscles in his back when jumping the first fence.

"He's pulled some muscles in his back. We'll give him treatment during the week then he'll go out in the field. It's not a big deal," said the West Witton trainer.

"He's come down a bit steep over the first and Graham (Lee) reckons he just hung a bit left from there. He's pulled a couple of little muscles, nothing serious, so we'll get the little problem sorted and go to war with him next year.

"He's gone down to the first all right but then he's skewed left which he never does - he always jumps straight. There was obviously some little thing bothering him.

"He's had three quick races and probably needs a bit of time to recover between races, but it was just the way the campaign was set out.

"We went for it, we're happy with the horse and hopefully now we'll get him placed to advantage next year.

"He's good enough to run in the best races, and to win or two of them would be grand."

Our Selection Triumphs...Hennessy claims victory by a neck!

Tony McCoy and Hennessy brought the jumps season to a thrilling close with a battling victory in the bet365 Gold Cup on Saturday.

A distant fourth turning for home, McCoy galvanised his mount to close down the leaders in the final stages and claim victory by a neck.

"I thought he (McCoy) was beaten with more than a circuit to go but luckily had one of his good days - one of the 364 of them! The rest of us jockeys could win on the best horses, but he can win on the ones who aren't - and that's the test"

That`s Racing!

"Flores Sea, 4lb higher than when scoring over course and distance 25 days earlier, moved sweetly into the home straight, but was unable to get to the winner try as he might. Things may well have been different had he not forfeited ground with a sluggish start, however, and he is evidently still weighted to go in"...Racing Post Synopsis
"sluggish start"?...he was nibbling another horses ear in the stalls when they went off, decided to get out, at his leisure, and gave the eventual winner a seven length start!

The info` was spot on, the horse was spot on, the price was spot on but....that`s racing!

How Unlucky...another few yards and....

Trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies claimed a third Scottish Grand National triumph as Hello Bud made all the running over an extended four miles to win at Ayr.

The 12-1 shot, ridden by Paddy Brennan, held off a late charge from champion jockey Tony McCoy on Gone To Lunch (12-1).

Out The Black (12-1) and Chiaro (10-1), both trained by Philip Hobbs, were third and fourth respectively.

King Barry kept Hello Bud for company in the early stages, while Out The Black, Coe and Brooklyn Brownie were all close up.

Arteea was pulled up in the rear before the field went out on the final circuit, with That's Rhythm a faller.

Hello Bud fended off all challengers up front and though Gone To Lunch came with a late flourish, McCoy's mount was half a length down at the line.

"Onwards and Upwards"...Update From Earlier "Hayley" Blog

Good news!

Hayley has yet to make a decision on her near-term future, following her medical advice, although media work would be an obvious avenue.

"I'm obviously upset and I don't really know what I am going to do yet," she said.

"Hopefully my sponsors can find me lots of things to keep me occupied. I will be able to be back riding at some point but, until then, we'll have to see."

Her agent, Guy Jewell, confirmed that Turner is likely to be preoccupied by media work during her enforced absence. He said: "She is devastated to be signed off for a year but you can't mess around with head injuries. "The best thing is that she is absolutely fine and she will be back.

"You look at the poor lad in Ireland (Matt O'Connor) and even away from racing over the last few months.

"At times you might think you're unlucky, but in the cold light of day you are luckier than you think.

"You would hope with her media skills there might be a few days on the box for her coming up."

We agree...lol x

Hayley Turner Update

Hayley Turner has been rocked by the news that she will not allowed to ride for 12 months following her accident in March.

Britain's top female jockey, who became the first woman to ride 100 winners in a calendar year in 2008, suffered head injuries following a fall on the Newmarket gallops.

Turner recently admitted she was itching to get back into the saddle but the British Horseracing Authority's chief medical advisor Dr Michael Turner has stood her down until 2010.

"Having carefully studied the results of recent tests and consulted expert opinion, I was unable to recommend that her licence be renewed until 12 months from the date of the accident," he said.

"Hayley has recovered well from her injuries but you cannot take any chances in cases like this.
"She remains under regular medical review and is due to see her own specialist at Addenbrookes (Hospital) in early June.

"Hayley is obviously disappointed but understands my decision."

Having had the pleasure of meeting Hayley many times we obviously wish her well. Barry R x

Job Done!

I told you 10 am this morning...more where this came from this week!

A modest handicap won from the front by KIPCHAK.

Fifth under a penalty on his first outing for this stable, the three-times Lingfield Polytrack winner was able to race from a 6lb lower mark this time.

Definitely a bit of a character, he sported cheekpieces and a noseband.

On his first try on a straight track, he hung left but kept going well enough and never looked like being overhauled.

He is just the type of horse his trainer excels with.

Notre Pere To Run In Scottish national

AN HOUR after being taken out of the Powers Whiskey Irish Grand National, Notre Pere headed the 37 confirmations made on Monday for the Coral Scottish Grand National at Ayr.

»Scottish National betting

»Scottish National card Jim Dreaper's Coral Welsh National hero was taken out of the Fairyhouse equivalent at 11am on Monday due to the quickness of the ground, but now sits at the top of the handicap for Saturday's race after the withdrawal of Halcon Genelardais.

Notre Pere will carry 11st 11lb and the next in line, Miko de Beauchene, another former Welsh Nationa winner, has been allotted 11st 1lb.

Trainer of the former top weight Alan King left in West End Rocker and leading fancies Chief Dan George and Tricky Twister both stood their ground.

The Jimmy Moffatt-trained ante-post favourite Chief Dan George, who will be ridden by Paddy Aspell, is searchingfor a hat-trick having won comfortably at Catterick and Kelso on his last two outings. Moffatt said: "We are looking forward to Saturday, it is nice to be going into a big race with a horse with a chance, it is a big week for the stable. "Chief Dan George is very well. He is in great form, we have freshened him up and he is like a bull and raring to go. He certainly deserves to take his chance in a big one like this and I hope we won't be disappointed, we can do no more than get him there fit and well and then it is down to him.

Moffatt added: "The race has been the plan all along for him, we just wanted to get a couple of chases into him for experience and so far everything has worked out as we wanted.

"Hopefully we get him there in one piece and he shows his stuff. We're getting very excited about it but there are are lot of top-class horses in the race and we've plentyto do."
Jeremy Scott is looking forward to running
Gone To Lunch as long as he is happy with the ground conditions.

The nine-year-old would be on a retrieval mission having been pulled up in the RSA Chase at Cheltenham after stumbling at the ninth fence. He had notched up a hat-trick over fences previously.

"We had a bit of a headache with him after Cheltenham - his nose hit the ground a bit hard, but once he got over that he's been absolutely fine," said Scott. And the trainer revealed it was the horse's regular partner Tony McCoy, who suggested going for the Ayr marathon.

"Tony McCoy has always talked about the Scottish National for him. As long as we get some decent ground we'll be up for it, but I don't know who will ride him at the moment," Scott added.

News From Ferdy Murphys Yard At West Witton

Ferdy Murphy is planning to make raids on the Irish and Scottish Grand Nationals over the next fortnight.

He did not have a runner in this year's Aintree spectacular, is aiming Poker De Sivola at the Irish version at Fairyhouse on Easter Monday.

The West Witton trainer said he was pleased with the six-year-old after finishing seventh on his last start in the Kim Muir Challenge Cup at Cheltenham.

The following weekend Murphy will head for Ayr with Hot Weld and stablemate Nine De Sivola to make a bid for the Scottish marathon.

The pair finished first and second in the 2007 renewal of the race but Hot Weld has struggled to regain his form since taking the BetFred Gold Cup at Sandown just a week after his Ayr triumph.
The 10-year-old was pulled up in both his two starts since injuring himself in that race, firstly at Doncaster in February and then again in the William Hill Chase at Cheltenham.

Nine De Sivola in comparison ran a fine race at the Festival, finishing third in the four-mile National Hunt Chase. "Poker De Sivola will go to Ireland next Monday for the Irish National," said Ferdy. "He's very well and ran a good race in the Kim Muir. Hot Weld and Nine De Sivola will go to Ayr."

Saturday's Maghull Novices' Chase winner Kalahari King looks likely to head for Sandown to contest the bet365.com Celebration Chase later this month. After finishing a close second in the Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham last month, the eight-year-old confirmed himself as a top-notch novice chaser with a smooth eight-length victory over Tatenen.

Ferdy, who also has a choice of two races at the Punchestown Festival as possible alternatives, said the horse had returned from Aintree in tremendous form. "He cantered out this morning and was bouncing, so you wouldn't know he'd had a race," added the trainer. "He's really well and fresh and well we're delighted with him. He's done it well, he seems to thrive at this time of the year and move forward. "We'll be making two entries for him for Punchestown on Wednesday in the two-mile novice and a speculative one in the Grade One. "He'll also have an entry in the Celebration Chase at Sandown and that's probably favourite where he'll go. He'll have a 4lb penalty for that."

To Follow Yesterdays 7/1 Winner...

I was over the moon with the 7/1 about Mr Skipiton yesterday on the AW. Like I said on the message it pays to follow horses in form, certainly the value bet of the day. Steve Carson gave it a great ride to get up in the shadows of the post.

Great Day of Racing at Aintree today and its the National on Saturday. Its all about Denman today as far as the media is concerned but I will be looking for better value! I will be having a nice punt on Saturday for the National at lovely odds.
