Som Tala Takes The Plate

A gutsy display under Tony Culhane saw Som Tala take the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle on Saturday. The tough nine-year-old made the running in the two mile £180,000 contest to give trainer Mick Channon his first win in Europe's richest stayers' handicap.

Culhane took the initiative from the outset after overnight rain had changed the going from good to firm to soft.

The 40-year-old veteran used his considerable experience to push his mount clear in the home turn and stay on strongly to score by three-quarters of a length from Wells Lyrical.

The result marked the biggest success in the race to date for the jockey

"I have had a few rides going into the race with half-chances, but all have bombed out so it is great to have won it at last," he said.

"This is the first time I have ridden Som Tala, but Mick is a great man to ride for - he gives you a free rein to ride your race and whatever decision you make, he stands by you.

"I did not want to make sure I gave the advantage of a good draw away so we went on and I knew nothing would get past him in the closing stages.

"I have been riding for 24 years and you need to be riding in these good races on horses with a good chance."

Culhane and Channon celebrated their success in the feature by landing the EBF/Tarmac Maiden Stakes with The Human League - who started 9-4 favourite on the strength of his debut run when third at Newmarket.

Our selection Hendersyde finished fourth at 10/1...still a nice little earner backed each way!

Yeats Entered For Prix De L`Arc...but will he run?

History-making Yeats could attempt to add the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe to his list of victories.

Yeats, trained by Aidan O'Brien, won his fourth Gold Cup title at Ascot - and he now has the option of running in Longchamp's mile and a half showpiece in early October.

"Aidan has said the horse is back, cantering away, and fine in himself, and his future will revolve around Goodwood, The Curragh, and the Arc weekend in Paris. It will be a mixture of these options," Part-owner John Magnier told the Daily Telegraph.

"He'll be entered for the Arc, but there's no guarantee he'll run.

"But history tells us that really good stayers have run well in the Arc, horses such as Levmoss and Ardross.

"Listen, if you had said before he ran that you were planning to win the races Yeats has won, you would have been certified."

Well Done Johnny and Barry...the other one!

Johnny Murtagh won the London Clubs International Charity Trophy as top jockey at Royal Ascot for the second year in succession.

The Irishman clinched victory by virtue of his second place on Cesare in the opening race of the week after matching Richard Hughes' four winners during the five days' action.

It is all the more remarkable considering Murtagh missed the last two days through suspension.
Yeats' victory in the Gold Cup for the fourth year in a row was undoubtedly the highlight of the week for the rider, who also won the title in 2001, 2002 as well as last year.

Barry Hills ended the meeting as leading trainer for the first time in his 40-year career thanks to three glorious triumphs.

The results will be a tonic to the veteran, who was unable to attend the meeting after being hospitalised due to a life-threatening blood disorder.

We Watched Racing History Being made Yesterday

Yeats made Royal Ascot history with a stunning fourth success in the Gold Cup to thrill the crowd on Ladies' Day. Johnny Murtagh's mount, trained by Aidan O'Brien, was sent-off as the 6-4 favourite...5/2 available early doors...but after a poor showing last time out there were some question marks over his current well being.

However, after a steady pace was set in the two-and-a-half-mile showpiece, Murtagh pressed go turning from home and led a long way out.

That burst of pace broke the rest of the field and, despite young pretender Patkai coming out of the pack to chase him home, the eight-year-old kept on producing and strode away to a momentous victory.

O'Brien said: "Unbelievable - that's all I can say. I was so sick this morning as I really believed this couldn't happen.

"History is very hard to change, we knew we had a wonderful horse but usually fairytales don't come true.

"You dream and dream and dream, we were in this position and we never would be again - great things can happen.

"It's unbelievable and I want to say a big thanks to everyone involved."

Murtagh was actually one of the first of the principals at work before the turn for home, but his mount was more than willing to respond and the advantage he took early in the straight proved decisive.

Patkai could only get within three and a half lengths of the brilliant champion, while Geordieland, runner-up for the last two years, had to make do with third this time around, 15 lengths further adrift under Shane Kelly.

"Muhammad Ali told everyone he was the greatest and he was, and Yeats has shown everyone today that he is the ultimate heavyweight champion," said Murtagh.

"I had no doubts. After Navan I looked at Aidan and he told me 'he'll be grand for Ascot'.

"We kept saying the ground was too soft at Navan but nobody believed us and people tried to pick holes in him. He loves fast ground, he loves Royal Ascot and he comes alive here.

"This is one the greatest days of my riding career and the feeling I had coming past the line for the horse alone was incredible.

"I've had a good week but for the horse to win four Ascot Gold Cups is fantastic and the crowd turned out in force to see him. It's good for racing, and Yeats is everything that's positive about racing."

EXCLUSIVE: Anger at Ascot - Trainer Dandy Nicholls in a rage over fiasco at the stalls

Ascot was the scene of a royal incident yesterday when furious trainer Dandy Nicholls squared up to the starter after his horse was withdrawn before the start of the Royal Hunt Cup.

Dandys' Bencoolen was one of three horses left at the stalls by starter Peter Haynes moments before the one-mile race.
Afterwards Nicholls aggressively confronted Haynes, calling him a 'p***k'.

Hooh Hah...another WINNING NAP

Vision D'Etat took a narrow victory in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot after edging out favourite Tartan Bearer in a thrilling finish.

Eric Libaud's four-year-old was at the rear of the field a furlong out before jockey Olivier Peslier, in the saddle for the first time ahead of regular rider Ioritz Mendizabal, grabbed the lead inside the final furlong.

The 4-1 shot came under a strong challenge from the 6-4 favourite in the closing stages but held on by half a length with another French raider, Never On Sunday, a head away in third place.

Tazeez made the early running from Twice Over and Virtual with Tartan Bearer on the outside. Twice Over went on two furlongs out but he was soon strongly challenged.

Peslier's patience paid off on last year's French Derby victor - without his usual tongue tie which was not declared - who came through with a powerful run.
He got first run on the second and third to become the second French-trained winner in three years after Manduro in 2007. Twice Over rarely enjoys much luck in big races and having looked like winning at one stage he had to settle for fourth, beaten less than a length.

Libaud said: "Of all the winners I've had in the world this is the best one.

"I knew it was going to be difficult from last place but I could see the horse was going well and Olivier had told me the straight at Ascot is long, so I was quietly confident.

"This is the nicest and best victory I've ever achieved." Peslier added: "I was just behind the lead. My horse is not lazy and I just took a bit of time. I needed a chance and he moved out well.

"The trainer told me before it was better if he came late and the race was perfect for me.

"He's a typical French horse. When you are one or two lengths behind it's not a big problem because he's got a good turn of foot. That was a big help for me."

Ascot Set To Water...four millimetres of water set to be applied to track after dry day

Officials at Ascot were set to water the course on Monday evening ahead of this week's five-day Royal meeting.

Clerk of the course Chris Stickels was waiting until 7pm before deciding whether to apply four millimetres of water on the entire track.

He was set to take the decision after a dry day, with the going described as good to firm.
Stickels said: "We have had no rain today and if it hasn't rained by 7 o'clock tonight, I will be watering.

"We haven't had any rain in this area. I think there has been some in Reading as well as south and east of us, but nothing to speak of in the locality.

"The chances of now getting rain are becoming slimmer as the evening progresses from what I can understand from the latest forecast.

"I am planning to put four millimetres on the whole course.

"The forecast for tomorrow is for no real showers, bright and sunny, temperatures of 23 degrees and light winds.

"We'll see how the track rides but I'd be happy to water in the week if necessary."
Absolutely "sluicing it" down here...amazing this weather! Barry R

"Hanagan To Be Fit"...News From Richard Fahey

Paul Hanagan is expected to be fit for Royal Ascot despite suffering a leg injury in a paddock incident at York on Saturday.

Richard Fahey's stable jockey, who is set to get the leg up on Utmost Respect in the Golden Jubilee and Rose Blossom in the Queen Mary, was cow-kicked by his intended mount, William Morgan, before the Leonard Sainer EBF Maiden Stakes.

Treated by paramedics in the paddock, he was stretchered into an ambulance and taken to York District Hospital for precautionary X-rays which revealed no broken bones.

"He has bruised his leg, hopefully he will ride today at Carlisle said Fahey.

"He was very lucky as it just caught him in the wrong position. He'll definitely be OK for Royal Ascot."

Fahey did warn that Utmost Request could miss the Golden Jubilee on Saturday if the ground is too fast.

"I'd have a little question mark about the ground," he added. "I want to see what the ground is like earlier in the week. If it's like last year he definitely won't run.

"He got away with it at York but there was definitely plenty of moisture in it.

"It will be interesting to see and I will have a look at it before I make any decision."
Good Luck on both accounts Richard...keep them coming! Barry R

Main Aim Has Options

The options remain open for Main Aim ahead of the Sir Michael Stoute-trained four-year-old's assault on Ascot.

Main Aim caught the eye with victory in a Group Three race over seven furlongs at Haydock in which we backed him heavily.

And although he already holds an entry for the Golden Jubilee, the Queen Anne Stakes over a mile is also a distinct possibility.

"We haven't quite decided yet," said Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for owner Prince Khalid Abdullah.

"We are certainly looking at the Queen Anne, for which he'd have to be supplemented.

"Obviously we are going to have to make our minds up pretty soon but at the moment the main consideration is that or the Golden Jubilee.

"He certainly wasn't stopping at the end of seven furlongs last time and one thing the Oaks showed us was that Oasis Dream's can stay a mile-and-a-half!"

Dandy Is The Man!

David Nicholls claimed his fourth Investec "Dash" in eight years with bottom-weight 11-1 shot Indian Trail.

Paul Quinn rode home the nine-year-old who was propping up the rear at halfway but came with a withering run through the field.

Mick Kinane had tried to make all on the speedy Captain Dunne and appeared to have fought off all of his rivals, however Indian Trail got up in the final strides to win by a short-head. Nicholls also saddled the third home, Strike Up The Band with Oldjoesaid fourth.

Quinn said: "It's nice to have a ride on Derby day but to ride a winner is even better."

Nicholls said: "This is our Derby. It's hard when you've got more than one runner in the race but all the owners seem to get on and they've all been congratulating each other.

"I'm really pleased for Paul more than anything because he doesn't get the rides he deserves.

He might be a lightweight jockey but hopefully people will see him win here today and give him a few more opportunities, he certainly deserves it."

Tim Palin, representing the Middleham Park Racing syndicate, owners of Captain Dunne, said: "It's very emotional to be here and have the horse run so well.

"It was a great ride from the jockey and a great training performance by Tim (Easterby).

"He's pinged the stalls, tried to make all, been caught on the line and chinned close home."

Betfairs And Racing Diarys Editor Carl Harris Says "Back Fame And Glory"

"Sariska won the Oaks, now lets see if we can land an Epsom Classic Double with Fame and Glory!

The Derby (3.45) promises to be every bit as enthralling as the fillies classic. Six from the field of 13 are trained by Aidan O’Brien who could make history by filling all the places. I doubt that will happen but it looks almost certain that the 2009 Derby winner will be trained in Ireland, but which one?

I think the race is between John Oxx’s 2000 Guineas winner Sea The Stars and Fame and Glory
Nathan Lynch thinks that Sea the Stars will win, but for me its Fame and Glory!
We gave you Fame and Glory following his Ballysax stakes victory (6/1) before his priced collapsed after a convincing win in Ireland’s premier Derby trial. The jockey arrangements have pushed the price back out to incredibly good odds with Johnny Murtagh opting to ride Rip Van Winkle with Seamus Heffernan keeping the ride on the Montjeu colt.
If he had a choice I think Johnny has got it wrong. I can not see Rip Van Winkle winning the Derby, I think the race is between the Guineas winner, Sea The Stars and Fame and Glory. Will Sea The Stars stay? I think it would take an exceptional horse in the modern era to do the double.

It is 20 years since Nashwan won the 2000 Guineas and the Derby in the same season. If Sea The Stars were to become the 35th horse in history to do the classic double then he would be a great horse, the best for a generation. From what I have seen Fame and Glory has all the attributes required to win the Derby and has followed the same route to Epsom as Aidan O’Brien trod with Derby winners Galileo and High Chaparral.

I advise backing Fame and Glory to win the Derby at what I think are really good odds.

Lets hope that Fame and Glory completes a classic double for us at Epsom!"
