It`s On...Bring Me A Sticky Toffee Pudding Back Please

This afternoon's meeting at Cartmel will go ahead as scheduled after the track passed a 7.30am inspection.

An unfavourable forecast prompted clerk of the course Anthea Morshead to announce an early check and although the the track has been hit by a substantial amount of rain, officials are happy to give the card the green light.

Morshead said: "We have had 24 millimetres of rain in the last 24 hours, but the rain sheets that we have put out have saved the day. The majority of the ground is heavy, we'll miss the last two fences on the woodside and we've pushed both bends very wide so they are on completely fresh ground."

She added: "The forecast for this morning is largely dry and while there is a risk of rain coming in this afternoon, there is some doubt about the arrival time. Obviously we can't call off the meeting for what might come so racing goes ahead.

"The ground staff have done a huge amount of work and thank god it has paid off."

Sunday 30 August 2009

Delegator made a perfect first appearance for Godolphin with an emphatic victory in the totesport.com Celebration Mile at Goodwood.

Frankie Dettori extricated the 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes runner-up from a slight pocket to take this Group Two contest in fine style.

The 4-6 shot quickened like a class horse off what had been just a moderate pace to win by a length and a half from Zacinto, with the pace-setting Ordnance Row a close third.

A clearly impressed Dettori said of the former Brian Meehan inmate: "He showed a tremendous turn of foot, he's a proper horse.

"He was second to Sea The Stars, he was second to Mastercraftsman. It was nice to get his confidence back and it's all systems go for the QEII.

"I spoke to Jamie (Spencer) and he said ride him with confidence. I was actually quite taken with the way he picked up - I haven't ridden a horse like this for a while."

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford added: "His class has shown. Good horses can get themselves out of trouble and he has got that turn of foot.

"It was all there in the form book and we had hoped to see that kind of performance. But first time out for a new stable you are never sure.

"He will go to the QEII next as that is the race we want to win, and then he will go the Breeders' Cup for the Mile. Santa Anita will suit him well and that really is his race. The exciting thing is he stays in training next year."

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, said of Zacinto: "He has run a decent race and been beaten by a nice horse. He is coming forward all the time and we will look at races over a mile and a mile and a quarter for him."

Saturday "BIG RACE" preview

Zacinto bids to further enhance his growing reputation when he lines up in the totesport.com Celebration Mile at Goodwood.

The Dansili colt was beaten just a neck on his final start as a juvenile in Doncaster's Champagne Stakes, but injury prevented him bidding for Classic glory at Newmarket, though Sir Michael Stoute slowly nursed him back to full health and he won on his return at this venue earlier this month.

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager for owner Khalid Abdullah, said: "He worked nicely the other morning and is in good shape. It's a tough race, and he is certainly going to need to show more than normal improvement, but he is a horse we have always rated highly."

Gary Moore believes Bankable may improve for the outing as he has his first outing for the Sussex handler in the totepool Winter Hill Stakes at Windsor.

The son of Medicean has been plying his trade at the highest level on his last couple of starts, most recently finishing a fine third in the International Cup at Kranji.

Moore said "He's been doing pretty well and was quite tired when he came back from running well in Singapore. We gave him plenty of time to get over that - he has taken time to come to himself - but he is a pretty lazy work horse and doesn't do a lot at home."

"My concern for Saturday is the level of fitness I've got him up to, but his last couple of bits of work have been a lot better than what they had been in the early days."

Zomerlust Wins at 5/1

Another winner for top tipster Barry Robson who lands a 5/1 winner with Zomerlust who bolted up at Ayr! This is top stuff, are you a member yet? This is what you missed today if not...

3rd 10 Memphis Man 14-1
Godolphin's Kite Wood heads the 11 entries left at the latest forfeit stage for the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster on September 12...this is going to be a "cracker"!

Impressive winner of the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket and the Geoffrey Freer at Newbury against older horses, the former Michael Jarvis-trained colt appears to have solid credentials.

Saeed bin Suroor could also run Mastery, who was second in the Great Voltigeur to Peter Chapple-Hyam's Monitor Closely. If Chapple-Hyam's colt were to take his chance he would need to be supplemented, along with Godolphin's Urban Poet, who is scheduled to run at Goodwood this weekend.

Henry Cecil's 19-length maiden winner Manifest is another for whom connections would need to stump up the £45,000 supplementary fee by September 7. However, Cecil and owner Prince Khalid Abdullah do have King Edward VII Stakes winner Father Time engaged.

Aidan O'Brien not surprisingly holds a strong hand with Age Of Aquarius, second in the Grand Prix de Paris on his last start, and Changingoftheguard, an unlucky second in the Ebor, heading his team. O'Brien could also run Johann Zoffany, Rockhampton and Von Jawlensky.

"Changingoftheguard is my Anti-Post selection...second to our 25/1 "tip" Sesenta in The Ebor"... Barry R

John Oxx, who has lowered O'Brien's colours on more than one occasion this year with Sea The Stars, may rely on Irish Derby third Mourayan.

The Barry Hill-trained Above Average and John Dunlop's Tactic, owned by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, complete the candidates.

Angus Gold, racing manager to the owner, said of the latter: "Mr Dunlop wanted to leave the horse in the St Leger and I will have to discuss whether he takes his chance with the trainer and Sheikh Hamdan.

"I think that his run in the Gordon Stakes was fair, but it was a better effort when he was second to Kite Wood at Newmarket. He's a nice horse, but he has a bit to find on the formbook. It remains to be seen whether an extra two furlongs can turn him into a St Leger winner, but we will decide if we go to Doncaster in due course."

Review Of Southwell Yesterday...wet!

Southwell's moderate all-weather fare was enlivened by the exploits of Mingun Bell, who now looks destined for far loftier assignments.

The two-year-old colt cruised to victory in the Endurance Ride At Southwell 5th September Novice Stakes under a supremely confident ride by Tom Queally.

Henry Cecil's 5-6 favourite was prominent from the start and effortlessly moved into the lead coming into the home straight, leaving his rivals floundering before scoring by three and three-quarter lengths.

Queally said: "He did it easily and liked the surface. He would have either loved it or hated it - thankfully he loved it. He's got the experience so he knows what he's doing and improves with every run."

Circumvent's win in the southwell-racecourse.co.uk Median Auction Maiden Stakes 30 minutes later may not have had matched Mingun Bell's breezy dominance, but it did showcase the hallmarks of a gutsy fighter.

The Paul Hanagan-ridden 7-1 shot was involved in a three-way scrap along the home straight as Prince Of Vasa and Comedy Hall moved up to offer determined challenges.

Despite being headed by the latter, the Paul Cole-trained newcomer came back for more to collect by a short head.

Oliver Cole, son of the winning trainer, said: "He's always showed a bit of speed at home, but I think in time he'll need a mile. The reason we came here is that he had a sore shin and we thought it's a better surface than the grass."

Sir Mark Prescott's Eloise (9-1) was given a positive ride by Seb Sanders to hold off Spring Quartet, who missed the break by some 15 lengths, in the Book On Line @ southwell-racecourse.co.uk Handicap.

Sanders then made it a double in the concluding Southwell Golf Club Lady Members Handicap when prevailing by a nose on Paul D'Arcy's Calahonda, one of two horses advised yesterday morning, at 12-1

Fallon For Catterick?

Officials at Catterick would be "delighted" if Kieren Fallon returns from his 18-month spell on the sidelines at the North Yorkshire venue.

The jockey is set to make his comeback from a worldwide ban for testing positive to a prohibited substance on September 4, with racing also taking place at Chepstow, Kempton and Lingfield on Friday week.

Catterick clerk of the course and general manager Fiona Needham said: "We'd be delighted if he came here as obviously there are a lot of people looking forward to him coming back and it would be a great boost for the racecourse."

She continued: "He's acknowledged as one of the best horsemen around so it could be potentially fantastic news. He's going to go where the rides are to be perfectly honest, but we would obviously be delighted if he came here. We'll have to keep our fingers crossed."

Donny` Cup For Geordieland...then The Breeders?

Jamie Osborne reports his stable star Geordieland to be bang on target for next month's Doncaster Cup.

The eight-year-old was placed in his third successive Gold Cup at Royal Ascot on his latest outing but bypassed last week's Lonsdale Cup at York after meeting with a slight hold-up in training.

However, Osborne reports the grey to be back firing on all cylinders, saying: "He's still heading to Doncaster all being well and it was unfortunate missing York really as taking nothing away from the winner (Askar Tau), you would have to say the race was a bit sub-standard," said Osborne.

"We just had a little hold-up with him and he missed a bit of work, so we thought it would be safer to shoot for Doncaster than rush him to get to York.

"He's best lightly-raced and gaps between his races seem to suit him, so it will be interesting to see what we meet next time.

"If all went well at Doncaster we are certainly considering the Breeders' Cup (Marathon), but we'll just have to see."

I`ve Joined The Gary Carroll Fan Club!

Willie Mullins heaped praise on rising star Gary Carroll as Sesenta fended off the challenge of red-hot favourite Changingoftheguard to snatch victory in the totesport Ebor at York.

Young apprentice Carroll brought the petite mare with a challenge inside the final furlong and the 25-1 chance stuck to the task well to deny the 15-8 market leader by a head. Hits Only Vic was three-quarters of a length adrift in third, with Nanton taking a close-up fourth in a photo-finish.

Johnny Murtagh was slowly away from the stalls aboard the Aidan O'Brien-trained favourite, and having taken a brave route around the inside was trapped for racing room as the pace increased down the home straight.

Mullins said: "She's only 15 hands so she's not going novice chasing! We just entered her in the big handicaps hoping for a light weight. We didn't claim at Ascot so we thought we'd try claiming. Gary rode for me last year and I thought he was one of the best kids I have ever seen on a horse.

"She has been running all year round - the only big meeting she has missed is Liverpool. Mick Kinane said she hated the ground at Galway last time so she had to have some decent ground here. We will have to try for some black type now."

Carroll said: "She got shuffled back early on and turning in I was a bit further back than I wanted, but she is all heart and was always hanging on. I just tried to ride it like any normal race, otherwise you start panicking, and if you are on the best horse it usually works out.

"It's my first ride here and my third ride in England. It's only my second season as an apprentice and I can't believe how it's going."

The British Horseracing Authority has dismissed trainer Karl Burke's appeal against a one-year ban.

Burke was disqualified after he admitted passing information for reward at a BHA hearing in July - although he had hoped to have his punishment reduced.

However Burke has seen his bid rejected, with the appeal panel, chaired by Sir William Gage, ordering him to pay £4,000 towards costs and forfeit his £800 deposit.

Burke, who has transferred his Spigot Lodge string to the care of his father-in-law Alan Jarvis, had trained Lord Shanakill to Group One success at the Prix Jean Prat earlier in the season.

I LOVE YORK...Jesse James provided extra "ammo" tonight...Bookmakers Beware!

York clerk of the course William Derby reports the ground to be on the quick side as the track prepares to open its doors for the Ebor meeting.

The four-day Festival kicks off with Sea The Stars and Mastercraftsman headlining a four-runner field for the Juddmonte International. The former, winner of the 2000 Guineas, Derby and Eclipse this season, can expect his favoured fast going.
Derby said: "We're currently good to firm. We just had one millimetre of rain at 4am on Monday. It's forecast to be largely dry, with temperatures of around 19 degrees on Tuesday and 22 on Wednesday."

He added: "There's no rain forecast for the next few days, but there is a band that could move in on Thursday."

The International is the feature event on the opening day, but there is plenty more to look forward to during the week with the totesport Ebor on Wednesday, the Darley Yorkshire Oaks on Thursday and Friday's Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes.

Derby added: "We're obviously very excited about the week ahead and the prospect of the highest-rated horse in the world (Sea The Stars) running here at our flagship meeting.

"Sea The Stars running is a highlight but it's great to see Mastercraftsman, a multiple Group One winner himself, in there as well. Sariska on Thursday would be another highlight as she is due to take on the older fillies, including Dar Re Mi, who won a Group One last time out."

Much has been made on the impact the current tough economic climate is having on the sport, but Derby issued an upbeat bulletin on advance sales for the meeting and is anticipating few negative effects.

"We have worked really hard on offering a good value day out and we're very lucky in that the people in the sport have been fantastic," he added.

"We've achieved good crowd numbers for our 10 racedays so far this year and hopefully that will continue."

York...can`t wait!

The ground remains good to firm at York ahead of the Ebor meeting despite a bout of watering and a shower on the Knavesmire.

Officials decided to water the track in order to ensure conditions do not become too fast, and four millimetres of irrigation were applied to maintain the current going.

Following the watering a shower fell, providing two millimetres of rain, but conditions during Saturday evening were described as bright and blustery with sunny spells.

The forecast for Sunday remains largely dry with sunny spells, while it is a similar story for Monday and Tuesday.

"We've gone from a forecast with a lot of rain to a forecast with not much rain," said clerk of the course William Derby.

"We are having regular dialogue with all connections of the horses and we will continue to keep people updated."

The meeting opens on Tuesday, when Sea The Stars is due to line up for the Juddmonte International as long as the ground is quick enough.

I`m Off To Ripon...looking forward to the Great St Wilfred

Henry Candy is confident Markab can take top honours when he clashes with 19 rivals in the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Stakes at Ripon.

The six-year-old has been in fine fettle this season, never more so than when finishing fourth from a poor draw in the Stewards' Cup at Goodwood two weeks ago, equalling his performance in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot.

Candy said: "He's a big, strong horse who will be able to cope with this. He goes on all sorts of ground as well. I don't see why he can't win it."

Thirsk-based trainer Kevin Ryan saddles two in the race and both have solid claims.

Everymanforhimself is a genuine sort who was an impressive winner at Haydock last week, while Advanced appears to be rediscovering the sort of form that took him to 2007 Ayr Gold Cup glory.

Ryan said: "It's a competitive sprint but Everymanforhimself ran well last week and hopefully he'll run well again. Advanced ran well last week too and he's done nothing wrong all season."

Sprint king Dandy Nicholls is triple-handed with Valery Borzov, Joseph Henry and Striking Spirit as he bids to win the race for the second year in succession following Tajneed's victory 12 months ago.

"Valery Borzov ran a good race at Goodwood and is a lovely horse to have. He seems to go on any ground so hopefully he'll run well," said Nicholls.

"Joseph Henry is dropping back in trip, which should help, and he just ran a bit free at Goodwood the other day. He has a chance as well.

"Striking Spirit doesn't want any more rain. It was soft enough at Goodwood for him last time but he ran a decent enough race considering the speed they went."

Border Patrol and Welsh Emperor Pull Out

Border Patrol has been declared a non-runner for this afternoon's CGA Hungerford Stakes.
The progressive colt was withdrawn due to unfavourable ground conditions after a dry night at Newbury.

Roger Charlton had earlier this week issued a proviso stating his representative would only run if there was significant rain.

Border Patrol was general second favourite for the Group Two contest after winning his last three races.

Charlton's three-year-old has been joined on the sidelines by Welsh Emperor.

Tom Tate's mud-loving 10-year-old was another casualty of the ground, officially described as good to firm.

Tate's popular campaigner won the Hungerford in 2006 before finishing a short-head second to Red Evie 12 months later.

Late Text Advice Saturday Long Lashes Heads For Ireland

A return to Ireland is on the cards for Long Lashes after she maintained her unbeaten record in the Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.

The American-bred filly made a winning debut in a Listed event at the Curragh when in the care of Jessica Harrington and was swiftly snapped up to join the powerhouse Godolphin team before staying on strongly to score in Group Three company at Headquarters.

Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford said: "We were delighted with her performance at Newmarket and she'll probably head towards the Moyglare next. She is still quite green and probably found herself in front a bit too soon, but hopefully the Moyglare will be a suitable target for her."

He added: "It was always the plan for her to head out to Dubai in the winter and that remains the case."

Long Lashes is currently as short as 12-1 with Ladbrokes in the ante-post market for next year's 1000 Guineas at Newmarket, but Crisford admits a decision on her participation in the Classic remains some way off.

"I think we have to wait to see how everything unfolds and I don't think we have to enter for the Guineas until next February. We'll just take it one step at a time," added Crisford.

News From Barry`s Yard

Daraahem is on course to return to action in the totesport Ebor at York in two weeks' time.

The four-year-old has not been seen since winning the Chester Cup in May after which he suffered a setback.

Trainer Barry Hills's son and assistant, Charlie, said: "He's all right and he's cantering now. He's on course for York. There's still quite a while to go, but we're happy enough with him."

Meanwhile, plans are fluid for Investec Oaks third High Heeled, who was fifth in the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday eight days after she won a Listed race at York.

"I thought she ran all right at Goodwood," Hills continued.

"She's in plenty of races to come but we haven't decided yet. She's had two very quick races, but I thought the winner (Midday) looked very impressive."

One horse who has now left the Hills yard is Caracciola, fourth to Schiaparelli in the Goodwood Cup.

The Hills team prepared the 12-year-old for last week's Group Two while his regular trainer Nicky Henderson serves a suspension preventing him from having entries for three months.

"He's gone now from the yard and has been turned out for a summer break," Hills concluded.

Catterick And Chepstow Abandoned

Tuesday's meeting at Catterick was abandoned due to unsafe ground after five races.
Despite little rain in the area, light drizzle on top of good ground made conditions slippery on the bends. There was a delay after the third race as officials and riders inspected the track following Tubby Littlejohn's earlier slip in the first race.

Sand was applied to the bend with both stewards and jockeys happy to let racing continue.
However, in the fifth race, Barry McHugh's mount Actabou fell at the two-furlong marker forcing officials to inspect again. After a long deliberation by jockeys, trainers and stewards, the decision was taken to abandon racing.

Clerk of the course Fiona Needham said: "We had an inspection earlier in the day and all the jockeys were happy to ride. We had a bit more rain after that and then the incident when the horse fell in the straight. Basically it changed legs in the dip, sort of leapt in the air and slipped as he was recovering.

"In the interests of safety after that incident, we felt we had to abandon. I think it was a common sense decision as that happened on the straight whereas the first incident was on the bend which you can legislate for.

"It's unfortunate we were on quicker ground, which a lot of people want, but then it is quite lush also. To be fair to everybody, we gave it a shot but you've got to go down the common sense route in the end."

McHugh added: "The horse just slipped, both his front legs slipped and he just couldn't find a leg.
"It was perfect ground but because of the lush grass it was on the greasy side. As the problem happened in the straight as well as on the bend, it was obviously in the interests of safety that it was called off. Some of the older jockeys came up after my fall and said it wasn't safe and everybody agreed.

Chepstow were forced to abandon after only two races due to heavy rain.

Persistent rainfall during the morning and more after racing started meant conditions soon took a turn for the worse. The meeting started on time at 2.10 but the rain began to take its toll and parts of the course were left waterlogged.

Clerk of the course Tim Long said: "We've had heavy rain all day. We made a going change from soft to heavy but it carried on raining. Jamie Spencer and Richard Hughes were out on the track with me and they voiced a few concerns and as soon as the jockeys do that, you have to take heed."

He added: "They didn't feel it was fit to carry on. We had up to half an inch of rain before racing and I haven't been back to a rain gauge since but I'd imagine it's nearly up to three-quarters of an inch."

I Like Long Lashes

Long Lashes could make her debut for Godolphin in the skybet.com Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday.

The two-year-old filly, now trained by Saeed bin Suroor, is reported to have settled in well to her new surroundings after being bought out of Jessica Harrington's stable.

Long Lashes made a highly-promising start to her career when landing a the Listed Ballygallon Stud Stakes and Godolphin's racing manager Simon Crisford said: "She's a possible runner. We'll make a definite decision later in the week. She's done well since she came over from Ireland."

At the time of her purchase, the long-term objectives for the filly were said to be the UAE Guineas and UAE Oaks at Meydan in 2010.

Long Lashes was successful over six furlongs on her racecourse bow and the Sweet Solera is over an extra furlong.

The Group Three has attracted a quality entry of 15. Aidan O'Brien has put in both Devoted To You and Famous, while Henry Cecil is responsible for Albany Stakes third Chachamaidee.

Among the other entries are Richard Hannon's Blue Angel, John Dunlop's Clarietta and the Barry Hills-trained Sent From Heaven.

Stewards Cup Review...what you could see of it that is!

Genki (14-1) pulled away from his rivals in the final furlong to land the Bluesquare.com Stewards' Cup in convincing fashion.

The big field of sprinters was only visible in the closing stages, but Genki was well in command when they came into view. Roger Charlton's five-year-old, ridden by Steve Drowne, took this ultra-competitive handicap by a length from the David Nicholls-trained Evens And Odds.

Top-weight Knot In Wood was a gallant third, three-quarters of a length away, with favourite Markab fourth.

Drowne said: "He's a lovely old horse. I was well behind at halfway, but I had the ones on my side covered. When I got to the front on my side the others started to come back to me, he's picked them off and he's gone and got them.

"He's quite versatile for trip and settles well. He missed the kick the last twice for some reason and today he was sharp out and broke on terms with them and travelled with them. He's such a game horse. We must have been 10 to 15 lengths behind those on the far side at halfway. He's done well to pick them up."

Charlton added: "I watched the race on the screen but really couldn't see much, or see his colours. But then when I did it was all over. It is satisfying. He's had a lot of problems. Running a lot on firm ground didn't help him. I really thought he would run well in the Wokingham and I was very disappointed there.

"He ran a great race at Windsor from a bad draw, then he ran last weekend. It's not necessarily my style to run them twice in a week. I ran him last week because I feel he needs seven furlongs and I think you do to win this race. He was staying on when the fast horses were dropping away.

"You've got to go where the money is. There was a big race last week and one again this week. Looking at the programme book there wasn't another worth this kind of money for him coming up. It would be nice at some stage to step him up in grade to Listed or Group races."

Nicholls said of the runner-up: "That was grand and I am very pleased. I think it will be the Ayr Gold Cup next for him. All of mine have run well, although the ground changed and that wouldn't have helped some of them. They are running well but we are hitting the crossbar."

Richard Fahey said of Knot In Wood: "I would say that is the run of his life. That is a massive effort off top weight in the Stewards' Cup. I would say that they went too fast on the far side. There is the Taby Sprint is Sweden next month which I am keen to go for. He doesn't have a penalty there and it is a nice prize."
