Green Manalishi WINS 6/1>4/1 Then Amy Makes Her Dads Day Even Better...

Amy Ryan on Advanced (33-1) repelled the Frankie Dettori-ridden Axiom to land the totesport.com Challenge Cup (Heritage Handicap) at Ascot.

The 5lb claimer, riding for her father Kevin, kept her mount going strongly all the way to the line to take this cavalry charge over seven furlongs. All 26 runners came towards the far side in search of better ground as Proud Citizen, Capricorn Run and Proclaim took the field along.

Advanced got his nose in front inside the final furlong and although Dettori - a late replacement for Kieren Fallon - tried hard, he was still a neck down at the line. Axiom was a length ahead of Something and Proclaim who dead-heated for third.

The winning jockey said: "Just to ride him is amazing and to win is the best day of my life. I rode him at Doncaster at the beginning of the season and I'm so lucky Dad has kept me on him all year.

"I just wish Dad was here but he's at Haydock and we've had a winner there (my NAP today Green Manalishi 6/1>4/1). I was an amateur when I was 16 before I turned professional to get some experience and I appreciate it so much."

Punters Go Green......

Barry had one bet on Saturday, such was his confidence, he advised punters to take 6-1, the early price, about Green Manalishi at Haydock. Barry said that the third in the Ayr Silver Cup was more than enough to win here and so it proved with Daryl Holland giving Kevin Ryan's horse a great ride to win, live on Channel 4.

Full Result:
1st 7 Green Manalishi 4-1 F
2nd 12 Impressible 25-1
3rd 10 Atlantic Story (USA) 10-1

Word From "Our Man" Ken At Malton...Two In At The Curragh, Sunday

Shakespearean looks set to be sent to Ireland this weekend to bid for some of the massive prize-money on offer in Sunday's Goffs Million Mile at the Curragh.

The Shamardal colt got off the mark in Group company with an impressive success in the Solario Stakes at Sandown last month, form which was boosted by a subsequent French Group Three victory for the runner-up Buzzword.

"Our Man" Ken said: "Shakespearean goes for the Goffs Million at the Curragh on Sunday and we just left him in the Royal Lodge in case anything went wrong."

He added: "We left him in just in case the Curragh had to be abandoned or something, but that's not going to happen so the Goffs Million is the plan for him."

"A total of 20 horses have been left in the race at the latest entry stage with Mark Johnston also leaving in Bintalaleumydarlin." Barry R

Smarty Has A "Smart" One!

Bryan Smart feels he has a potential Classic prospect for next year in Distinctive.

Despite going off unfancied in the ring at 33-1, the Tobougg filly routed the field in the Group Three Firth of Clyde Stakes at Ayr, coming clear by three and three-quarter lengths from Midnight Martini.

The trainer said: "She's a nice filly, we've always thought a bit of her. We haven't made our minds up whether she'll race again this year. We'll just sit with her and see how she is. If a filly comes to hand at this time of year they carry on."

He added: "She hasn't been busy, that was her third run. She can only improve and I think she'll get every yard of seven furlongs.

"You have to think of giving the Classic trials a whirl. She's a Group three winner and she's by a stallion who got as far as a mile and a half in the end.

"You'd be talking that she ought to stay and I'm very excited about her."

Ayr Gold Cup Summing Up...learned a valuable lesson today me thinks...

Frankie Dettori thrilled a big crowd on a rare visit to Ayr when gaining his first success in the £150,000 William Hill (Ayr) Gold Cup on Jimmy Styles.

When trainer Clive Cox's turn came to pick his stall at Thursday's draw ceremony there was a breakdown in his phone communication with the course, and he had to forego his preferred number 19 and be content with 15.

But all was well in the end as, given a superbly-judged ride by Dettori, the 14-1 shot came with a strong run to lead inside the final furlong to get the better of Barney McGrew by a head, with top-weight Knot In Wood third.

There was no containing Dettori's joy and having performed his trademark flying dismount, he enthused: "Clive was very confident, the ground had dried up and the rest is history. He has run tremendous races all season and I am ecstatic.

"It is like winning a Group One race. It is a major race in the calendar and now my name is in print. There is great turnout and we got a great reception from the crowd. My first ride here was 22 years ago and it is fantastic to have won the big race."

Cox said: "It is very special. He has always promised to be a good horse and it has all come right - we could not believe a week ago that the ground would dry up for him, but the good Lord looked after us."

Barney McGrew ran a cracker under Tom Eaves and his trainer Michael Dods said: "No excuses really, but Tom said the horse clipped heels early on and nearly fell. Tom timed his run to perfection and they just got caught - he has run a blinder."

Knot In Wood's trainer Richard Fahey reflected: "I thought he had come to win his race, but the weight just beat him - he is a legend. The plan now is to go for the Diadem Stakes at Ascot next Saturday. He won't have to give lumps of weight away there."

A Sad Day In Malton...members of the racing fraternity have gathered to pay their respects to Jamie Kyne.

Hundreds of mourners packed St Leonard and St Mary's Roman Catholic church in Malton, North Yorkshire, for the funeral mass of the young apprentice who was killed in a suspected arson attack.

The 18-year-old died when fire ripped through a flats complex in Norton, near Malton, in the early hours of September 5.

Kyne died with fellow apprentice jockey Jan Wilson, 19, from Forfar, in Scotland.

Father Tim Bywater spoke of the "sickening horror" when news of the two deaths filtered through into the community. He said: "We feel cheated, we feel betrayed. These people were so young, full of life, vibrant, focused, living the dream. What happened was awful. Our reaction shows how much people cared about Jamie and Jan."

Fr Bywater said Kyne's achievements were "impressive". Commenting on the two jockeys who died, he added: "They represent what is best about their generation. We should speak of them often with reverence and affection for all that they have given to us."

Kyne's parents, Gerry and Madaline, were joined by his brothers Brandan, Daniel, Francis and Jason and sister Cassandra for the service, which lasted for an hour and 15 minutes.

In his address, Racing Post journalist Tom O'Ryan spoke of "the little guy with a sharp sense of humour, a twinkle in his eye and an infectious laugh". He told the mourners: "Somebody once said that jockeys are born, not made. Whoever that somebody was, he could have been talking about Jamie Kyne. He was a young man born to ride.

"You didn't have to be a so-called racing expert to spot it. Anybody with even half an eye could see it. Jamie was a pure natural in the saddle. Nerves? He never knew what it meant. He was ultra-confident, totally fearless, frighteningly determined.

"What he possessed was an undiluted passion and enthusiasm for what he was doing, without ever losing sight of the fact that riding horses - especially in races - was exhilarating, exciting and great fun. Within racing every single day, he was living his dream.

"What he had was something special, something you can't teach. A God-given gift: the ability to get horses to run for you, horses that often don't really want to run, sometimes don't want to give of their best. After the good lord made Jamie Kyne, he threw away the mould. He was a complete one-off."

Dandy "Fancy" Today...he`s also confident of a "bold performance" in The Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday

Ante-post favourite Evens And Odds is among a whopping 167 horses standing their ground at the confirmation stage for the William Hill (Ayr) Gold Cup on Saturday.

The five-year-old is among a big team left in the valuable six-furlong handicap by 'sprint king' David Nicholls, who is seeking to win the race for the sixth time this decade.

The weights are headed by the Richard Fahey-trained Knot In Wood, who was fourth behind Nicholls' Regal Parade 12 months ago. Hopefuls this year include Stewards' Cup winner Genki from Roger Charlton's stable, the Michael Bell-trained Redford, recent Doncaster scorer Brave Prospector and Beverley Bullet winner Exceptional Art.

Among the withdrawals at the five-day stage were top-weight Tamagin and Great St Wilfrid victor Markab. Although the big race itself is restricted to a maximum field of 27, the Silver and Bronze Cups will provide the chance of a consolation prize for many of the horses who miss the cut.

More From Godolphin...Poets Voice for The Dewhurst?

Saeed Bin Suroor has reported Mastery and Kite Wood to be none the worse for their exertions after they gave Godolphin a one-two in the Ladbrokes St Leger.

Kite Wood was sent off favourite for the Doncaster Classic but had to concede defeat to his lesser-fancied stablemate, who scored by three-quarters of a length.

"It was great to see our horses come first and second in a Classic race. They are good, no problems," the trainer said. "We don't know what we will do with them. We will think about it, there is no final plan for them yet."

Poet's Voice and Al Zir are set to bid for the top two-year-old races this autumn after they were successful at the Leger Festival. The Darley Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on October 17 looks the likely target for Poet's Voice following his smooth triumph in the Champagne Stakes.

Al Zir is also a possible for that Group One over seven furlongs, but instead he could return to Doncaster for the Racing Post Trophy over a mile on October 24. He also looked a bright prospect when following up his debut win at Newmarket by making all the running to beat his two rivals in a seven-furlong conditions race.

"Poet's Voice may go for the Dewhurst and he could stick to seven furlongs for his next race, but we will keep our options open for him," bin Suroor revealed.

"Al Zir could go for the Dewhurst or the Racing Post Trophy. He is coming on very well and he improved for his first run. I was hoping to see more horses in the race on Friday. He is still weak and will be better as a three-year-old. I like him a lot."

Godolphin are turning next to Delegator to give them further Group One glory in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on September 26.

The 2000 Guineas runner-up made an impressive debut for the operation after switching from Brian Meehan's stable when winning the Celebration Mile at Goodwood last month.

"He goes for the QEII. He showed a good turn of foot at Goodwood and is in good form. We now have three top three-year-olds in the stable - Delegator, Kite Wood and Mastery," bin Suroor added.

Poets Voice Advised...we should have followed the "Boys In Blue"

Classic times returned to the superpower of Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation as Mastery led home stablemate Kite Wood in the 233rd running of the Ladbrokes St Leger at a sell-out Doncaster.

Nearly 30,000 people turned up for the world's oldest Classic, and after Mastery's victory, connections reflected on what it meant to the Godolphin operation.

"British Classics are unique and don't grow on trees, which is why they are very difficult to win," said racing manager Simon Crisford.

"We haven't won a British Classic since Rule Of Law, but since that time we have won over 40 Group Ones, so the stable has been performing at the highest level all over the world.

"It is particularly pleasing to win a British Classic as these races are steeped in history and heritage. Racing in this country is the hardest in the world.

"Our plans for the future are to compete at the highest level when we have the horses to do so, and we are really looking forward to competing with the best stables in the world."

He added: "We will wait and see how both (Mastery and Kite Wood) are, but they might run again this season and they both stay in training next year."

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor, winning a fifth Leger, added: "I had confidence that Mastery could run well. He likes fast ground, which is what he got, but I don't think Kite Wood handled the ground as well."

The Leger was Ted Durcan's second Classic success, following on from Light Shift's 2007 Oaks win, and the 36-year-old proudly donned the winner's cap on his return.

He picked up a one-day ban (September 27) for using his whip with excessive frequency, while Monitor Closely's jockey Jimmy Fortune was banned for three days (September 27, 28 and 29) for careless riding.

Rock Jock is Special Delivery from Ireland..

Our contacts in Ireland were singing about the chances of Rock Jock at Down Royal on Friday. Members were dancing for joy after Rock Jock hacked up!

Donny` Report...weather wonderful, Fantasia fantastic, shame about Taajub!

Swilly Ferry kicked off his career with a third in the Brocklesby, and returned to Doncaster six months later to land the Weatherbys Insurance £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes.

Barry Hills' tough juvenile has taken six races in between, but retains his enthusiasm for the game and foiled the 15-8 market leader Taajub, our selection. The latter was bidding to add to his Gimcrack second, only to be overhauled by William Buick aboard the 16-1 winner inside the final half-furlong.

Hills' son and assistant Charlie said: "He is tough and genuine and has had some hard races since the Brocklesby. William has done fantastic to win from a bad draw, and experience helps in these sales races as they do go a good pace. We will see where we go but we will probably keep him to six furlongs."

In The Slips (28-1) ran out a convincing winner of the European Breeders' Fund Carrie Red Fillies' Nursery Stakes in the hands of Greg Fairley.

Paul Cole's runner came through to collar Yurituni inside the final furlong and Fairley quickly pulled clear to notch a two-and-a-quarter-length success. Yurituni just held on for second by a short head from Paleo, with Bahamian Music back in fourth.

Cole's son and assistant Oliver said: "She ran a great race last time at Windsor, and we had this race in mind immediately afterwards. She had a great weight today and I did expect her to run a big race.

"We won this race last year with Dream In Waiting so it is great to do it again and she is a very straightforward filly. This was her day so we'll take her home and see how she comes out of this."

Silver Wind compounded a difficult day for punters with a 12-1 success in the concluding Meadowhall Fabulous Fashionista Handicap for trainer David Evans and rider Silvestre de Sousa, who said: "He was never travelling well, and it was a case of niggling the whole way.

"We got there at the last minute."

Ouch...breaking news!

Ante-post favourite Age Of Aquarius is a shock absentee from the final field of eight for Saturday's Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster.

Aidan O'Brien's charge had been the 9-4 market leader with Stan James for the final Classic of the season but has been withdrawn, along with stablemate Rockhampton.

That leaves just eight to go to post, with Godolphin's Kite Wood now a likely favourite.

Tribute From Fallon

Kieren Fallon added a floral tribute for the two apprentice jockeys who died in an apparent arson attack as investigators continued to try to establish how the blaze began.

Flowers from the six-times champion jockey were placed on the gates which lead to the flats where Jamie Kyne, 18, and Jan Wilson, 19, perished early on Saturday morning.

They died when a fire ripped through a three-storey block of flats in Norton, near Malton, North Yorkshire.

Fallon's bouquet said: "You will be missed everyday. RIP. With love Kirsty and Kieren Fallon."

Another message described Kyne as a "gent of racing" and one said they would miss his "cheeky smile and witty banter". These tributes were placed alongside more than a dozen others just yards from where the blaze broke out.

Fire investigation officers moved into the flats complex to begin a painstaking examination of the scene.

It is understood the staircase was destroyed in the fire - an outcome which delayed both the rescue operation and the recovery of the two bodies.

The work to establish the exact cause of the fire could take up to three days to complete, police said.

A local man in his 30s, who was arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life shortly after the fire broke out, has been released by police on conditional bail pending further inquiries.

There were thought to be six people in the flats in Buckrose Court when the fire broke out. Earlier, they had been celebrating after receiving their "pool money" from a local trainer, witnesses said.

Malton Fire Update...Man Released

The man arrested by detectives investigating an alleged arson attack that killed two promising apprentice jockeys has been released on bail, police said.
The man, who is in his 30s, was held by police probing the blaze that killed Jamie Kyne, 18, and Jan Wilson, 19, at a block of flats in Norton, near Malton, North Yorkshire, in the early hours of Saturday.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "The man who was arrested in connection with the incident has now been released on conditional police bail."

Kyne's friend and fellow apprentice Ian Brennan, 20, was also in the third-floor flat and jumped to safety. He was released from hospital in the early hours and went on to ride at Thirsk.

Dean Pratt, also an apprentice, was taken to York District Hospital and treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

The bodies of the two victims have been removed from the wrecked property and at the scene of the blaze, a number of people came to lay tributes.

Police, who are appealing for anyone who was in the area between 1 and 2am to come forward, had earlier accompanied family members to the scene, though they would not confirm who they were connected to.

Crime scene investigators from North Yorkshire Police, the Forensic Science Services and specialist fire investigation officers were carrying out a full examination to establish the cause of the fire.

"The people who died were found on the second floor of the property. A post-mortem is expected to be carried out in the morning," a police spokeswoman said.

Kyne's parents, Gerry and Madeline, and his four brothers and younger sister are being comforted by relatives. The family run Kiltrogue stud farm in Claregalway, Co Galway. Miss Wilson is thought to have been an only child and her family are from Scotland.

Man Arrested...latest on fatal fire

A man has been arrested by police investigating an alleged arson attack at a block of flats in which two apprentice jockeys died and two others were injured.

North Yorkshire Police said a local man in his 30s was being quizzed by detectives investigating the fatal blaze at the three-storey block in Norton, near Malton.

The two people who died have yet to be named officially but we sadly know to be Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson, and two other people were taken to hospital in York, though one was later released.

Superintendent Steve Tarn said: "At this moment the police are treating it (the fire) as suspicious and would ask for the community in Malton and Norton for their help."

He added that the two men taken to York District Hospital were suffering from minor burns and the effects of smoke inhalation, but one had been released and the other did not have injuries considered life-threatening.

A police spokeswoman added: "The intensity of the fire has caused substantial structural damage to the building, including the stairwell, making it unsafe to enter. This has delayed the recovery operation.

"Two people remain unaccounted for, but until access is gained and a full search has been carried out, we are unable to confirm if there are any further casualties."

Group manager Stuart Simpson, from North Yorkshire Fire Service, said crews were at the scene within five minutes but could not get into the property immediately because of fire on the staircase.

He said firefighters had the blaze under control quickly and managed to get in through windows. Around 60 firefighters were involved. A police spokeswoman said they had been alerted by the fire service at around 2.15am.

Steve Kinsella, who runs a pub opposite the scene, said: "I heard someone shouting, so I looked through the window and saw a girl running in the street. All she had on was a t-shirt. She was shouting, 'fire, fire', screaming at the top of her voice."

A Very Sad Day...RIP Jamie and Jan

Two apprentice jockeys have died today and two others were injured after a fire broke out at a block of flats.

Emergency services were called to the flats in Buckrose Court, in Norton, near Malton, North Yorkshire, which are occupied by apprentice jockeys, in the early hours.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "At this stage it is believed two people have died although this cannot be confirmed until the fire has been fully extinguished and officers are able to enter the building and carry out a full search."

She added: "Two other casualties, two men believed to be in their early 20s, have been taken to York District Hospital where they are being treated for the effects of smoke inhalation and burn injuries.

"It is too early to say what the cause of the fire was but a detailed examination of the scene will be carried out."

The spokeswoman said police had been alerted by the fire service at around 2.15am.

I`m told the fire claimed the lives of Jamie Kyne and Jan Wilson...sad, sad, sad. RIP, Barry R

Fallons Rides On Friday...seven timer?

Kieren Fallon is very much in demand when he makes his eagerly-anticipated return to action following his lengthy suspension on Friday.

The jockey already has seven rides, all for different trainers, as he wastes no time in getting off to a busy start with a double header.

He kicks off by getting the leg up on Rare Malt for Newmarket trainer Amy Weaver in the opening Withyham Median Auction Maiden Stakes at Lingfield (2.20).

Tarporley handler Pat Morris then supplies Fallon with the mount on Roodee King in the Holtye Median Auction Maiden Stakes (3.20).

The Terry Mills-trained Diriculous in the Burstow Handicap (3.50) and Satwa Gold for Newmarket-based Ed Dunlop in the Felbridge Handicap (4.50) complete Fallon's four rides at the Surrey venue.

He then makes the short journey to Kempton for their evening all-weather fixture, where he has picked up three rides, all for Newmarket trainers.

He is on Wigan Lane for Paul Howling in the Celtic Contractors Nursery (6.20), followed by the two-year-old newcomer Arte Viva for Gerard Butler in the Celtic Contractors EBF Fillies' Conditions Stakes (7.50).

He winds up a hectic first day back by teaming up for his former boss Sir Michael Stoute on Bugaku in the Celtic Contractors Handicap (8.50).

Morris is delighted to have Fallon on board and said: "He does ride Roodee King and he has a good chance in a very ordinary race. It's a poor race but a winnable race.

"We use Richard Hughes and Jamie Spencer whenever we can, but they are banned. Kieren Fallon is not bad so we thought we'd use him! He's ridden for us before in Ireland."
