Xtension "Xtends" The Winning Run...3 out of 3 this week!

Clive Cox's Xtension paid Canford Cliffs a huge compliment when impressively winning the Veuve Clicquot Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Sent off the 7-2 favourite, (we advised at 4`s in the morning) the Coventry Stakes runner-up looked in some trouble two furlongs out as Mata Keranjang hit the front.

However, Adam Kirby's mount appeared to relish the seventh furlong and he flew home to win with something in hand by a length and a quarter. Corporal Maddox met trouble in running back in third.

Cox said: "He's a horse who I hope will continue to improve and one that has always been exciting. I hope he's a Guineas horse for next year and I think he's got the scope for a mile next year and maybe this year too. He's well entered up, but the most important thing is to see how he comes out of this race."

Kirby added: "He's a really good horse. Basically he travels on and off the bridle. He's still a big baby and has a lot to learn. He's got a lovely attitude as well and I think we've found a real good one.

"First time out he found it all very easy. Second time out over six furlongs, which is not really his trip, he was outpaced and came home really strong."

Paul Cole, trainer of the runner-up, said: "He hit the front at the right time and it wasn't that he stopped it was just that the other horse had too much speed for him. Conditions conspired against us as we could have done with a much faster pace, but he now has Group-race form. He's a very good horse."

NAP Delivers Again...

The Nap was Xtension, the Result was...
Goodwood 2.45
1st 9 Xtension (IRE) 7-2 F
2nd 7 Mata Keranjang (USA) 14-1
3rd 3 Corporal Maddox 8-1

J J or Main Aim In Betfair Cup...or is there one to beat them?

Connections of J J The Jet Plane do not envisage a return to seven furlongs being a problem when he lines up in the Betfair Cup, the big race on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood.

Slightly disappointing when beaten into fourth in the Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot, the South African speedball put up an improved effort when third in the July Cup with Main Aim, who reopposes, one place ahead of him.

Juan Nel, assistant to trainer Mike De Kock, said: "He's as fit and well as he can be and obviously we have Main Aim as our main danger as he has beaten us before. Hopefully with luck we can turn the tables."

He added: "I don't think the trip will be a problem for him and it's just whether he's good enough on the day. We were pleased with his run at Newmarket last time in what was a truer run race than at Ascot. Main Aim is a proven seven-furlong horse but we are going there hopeful."

Marcus Tregoning has endured a rough season, with a low-grade infection forcing him to shut up shop for six weeks earlier in the campaign but a weekend winner on Sunday has left him hopeful Finjaan can continue the revival.

"I was absolutely delighted with Sunday's winner, we've had a long wait but hopefully things are improving now," said the Kingswood handler.

"Finjaan is in very good form, it's a good race but he's a fresh horse, although he will obviously have to pull out something special to beat the first two in the betting (Main Aim and J J The Jet Plane)."

Ouqba arrives on the back of a narrow success in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot and Charlie Hills, son and assistant to trainer Barry, is confident the three-year-old will give another good account.

"I think Main Aim is the main danger and there is J J The Jet Plane as well, so it looks fairly competitive, but we've been happy with our horse since Ascot," said Hills.

"He's a horse that is on the up at the moment and seven furlongs is his ideal distance, so this race has always been the plan since he won at the Royal meeting. The ground should be perfect and we couldn't be happier with him."

Kirklees WINS...LATE TEXT SERVICE Does It Again...Hooh Hah!

Kirklees was sent off the even-money favourite for the Sky Bet York Stakes on the Knavesmire and duly ran out a convincing winner of the Group Two event.

Frankie Dettori had the five-year-old settled in a handy position on the rails in second after allowing Tazeez to stride on following an early battle for the lead.

Kirklees kicked on two furlongs out and though Curtain Call tried to go with him, he was found wanting for an extra gear as Dettori's mount accelerated away to win by a length and quarter.

Allied Powers and South African import Kings Gambit made late progress to claim the minor honours, with half a length separating the pair.

Dettori said: "I decided to take the lead and kick on early. He's a class horse. We've given him time to develop and he's now a really nice horse.
"Perhaps, campaigning abroad, I think he'll win a Group One."

Trainer Saeed bin Suroor added: "I am very pleased. He has improved from his last time.

"It's best for him over a mile and a quarter and he could come back here for the International. He's good enough to win a Group One."

The Late Text Service gave Kirklees direct from the course at 1.10 pm, TWO HOURS BEFORE RACE..."had chat from someone from stable...says has loads of ability and expected to win...Dettori is confident"

Service available online http://www.barryrobsonracing.co.uk/ ...can you afford NOT to be on it?

Conduit led home stablemates Tartan Bearer and Ask as Sir Michael Stoute executed one his greatest training feats in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.

Aidan O'Brien's squad occupied the leading positions for most of the way but once in the straight the Stoute trio surged past and had the race between themselves.

Ryan Moore drove Conduit (13-8 favourite) into the lead in the final furlong and beat Tartan Bearer, in the same Ballymacoll Stud colours, by a length and three-quarters, with Ask a further head away in third spot.

There was a stewards' inquiry as Conduit appeared to cross Tartan Bearer slightly in the closing stages, but the placings remained unaltered, although Moore picked up a three-day ban for careless riding.

Stoute, securing a fourth King George after Shergar (1981), Opera House (1993) and Golan (2002), said: "I've always loved this race and this hasn't quite sunk in yet. I'm very proud of them - they've all run great races.

"It ranks very high among my career achievements - this is a bit special. We were hoping one of them would win and it's a great thrill to see them perform to such a high standard."

Moore added: "There was a good pace and it set up nicely for him. When he got to the front he just had a little look and shifted right, as he has done in the past.

"He won the Breeders' Cup last year and from then we knew he was going to be a King George horse, but we didn't think we would have the three horses in it."

Conduit and Tartan Bearer are both owned by Ballymacoll Stud, and racing manager Peter Reynolds noted: "That is our 50th Group One win, and Michael's 10th individual and 20th overall Group One for Ballymacoll - which isn't bad!

"It's great to keep the firm up there. We are competing against some heavy hitters in Sheikh Mohammed and John Magnier's team and it is nice to have something to take them on with."

Preview Of Todays And Tomorrows Top Races

Strawberrydaiquiri Our Selection For Valiant Stakes

Fast-improving three-year-old Strawberrydaiquiri will challenge the older fillies for the first time in Friday's EBF Transformers And Rectifiers Valiant Stakes.

The grey, trained by Sir Michael Stoute and owned by Renata Jacobs, impressed many with her comfortable victory in the Coral Distaff on Eclipse day at Sandown where we backed her heavily.

Gary Coffey, the owner's racing manager, said: "She's in good form and Sir Michael says she has come out of her last race well. She carries a penalty here but we feel she is entitled to take her chance."

She`ll be no price but I`m confident she`ll take all of the beating and should be in your combo` bets if you`re squeamish about backing her singly.

Nine Remain In King George Showdown On Saturday

Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O'Brien dominate the field for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes with three entries apiece.

Stoute fields leading fancies Conduit and Tartan Bearer, third in the Eclipse and second in the Prince of Wales's Stakes respectively, as well as Coronation Cup hero Ask in the Betfair-sponsored feature.

One major bookmaker has already revised its prices following news that Cima De Triomphe became the latest casualty for the Ascot showpiece.Conduit has been cut to 13/8 from 7/4, while Golden Sword (4/1 from 9/2) and Look Here (6/1 from 7/1) have also seen their prices trimmed in the diminishing Group 1 field.

Sir Michael Stoute admits it is hard to split Conduit and Tartan Bearer.

The former will go into the race as favourite with his stablemate the second favourite in the betting.

However, Stoute is getting no clues at home as to which of his charges will come out on top.

"They have never done serious work together. Conduit wouldn't be spectacular at home but a little more generous than Tartan Bearer who leans towards the lazy side,"

"I'm not in the tipping business, my job is to get them there in the best physical and mental shape I can but I don't think there'll be much between them."

My selection is Tartan Beare albeit Ryan Moore has sided with Conduit. Don`t ask me why either, I just do!

Diana`s Choice Heads Abu Dhabi International List

Mike de Kock's South African raider Diana's Choice leads a 22-strong charge for the Abu Dhabi International.

The five-year-old mare will shoulder top weight under Pat Cosgrave as she drops back from Pattern-race company for this richly-endowed handicap. De Kock also fields Stubbs Art in a race that also features ante-post favourite Captain Brilliance from Jeremy Noseda's yard.

Roaring Forte, well fancied for the Royal Hunt Cup before being controversially withdrawn at the start, bids to atone for that disappointment, while a number of trainers are double-handed.

Michael Jarvis has yet to saddle the winner of the Abu Dhabi International but, in my opinion, he has a live chance with Taqdeyr.

The lightly-raced four-year-old was last seen finishing second to subsequent Group Three placed runner Doncaster Rover at Haydock earlier in the month.

Taqdeyr did not enjoy the clearest passage that day either, leaving Jarvis full of hope the switch back up to seven furlongs, combined with a little luck, can yield big-race glory.

"He looked a little bit unfortunate at Haydock as he did get a bit of a bump," explained Jarvis.

"The winner won well, though, and he (Doncaster Rover) ran pretty well at Newbury last week so the form looks pretty solid.

"I think seven furlongs is his better trip but he wouldn't want the ground too firm at Ascot.

"It would be to his advantage if there were a drop or two of rain before Saturday but the weather is unsettled so it is hard to tell if he will get it."

Elsewhere, York course specialist River Falcon will try to win the Sky Bet Dash at the fourth at attempt.

Jim Goldie's nine-year-old has been out of luck since winning at the Knavesmire in August 2007 and he has been unsuccessful in this six-furlong contest in 2004, 2007 and 2008. His best effort came last summer when he was sixth behind Lesson In Humility.

However, the 14-1 shot with the sponsors showed his well-being when finishing third to Pavershooz at Ayr on Monday.

Biniou will attempt to maintain his unbeaten record for this season in the same race.

Before this term, the six-year-old had only won once for Robert Cowell since his transfer from France at the start of 2007, but has now hit a rich seam of form.

A horse who likes to be able to dig his toe in, he scored at Thirsk in May and followed up at Newmarket last Saturday.

Cowell reported: "As long as the ground (currently good to soft) stays the same he'll run.

"He's in super form...he's absolutely loving it at the moment."

Predictably for a six-furlong sprint, there is a plethora of Dandy Nicholls entries.

The Thirsk trainer has four chances, Tajneed, Valery Borzov, Something and Striking Spirit.

Biniou, my choice, is currently a 12/1 chance with the sponsors with Viking Spirit a market mover on Thursday. He is 14/1 from 16s.

Peter Chapple-Hyam hopes the rains stays away ahead of the Sky Bet York Stakes.

He runs Monitor Closely, a fancy of mine for some time now, who finished third to Glass Harmonium in the Listed Hampton Court Stakes at Royal Ascot.

"Monitor Closely seems in good form and if the rain stays away we will be taking him to York on Saturday. He likes fast ground, so he would not want it wet on the Knavesmire".

"I wound him up a little bit at home before Royal Ascot, I possibly made him a little bit too keen and it showed in the race. The aim is to get him settled and in a nice rhythm at York.

"He wants 10 furlongs at the moment, so this race is ideal, and we'll see whether he wants further as the season progresses."

Barry "The Milkman" Robson Selections:

Friday: Ascot : Strawberrydaiquiri

Saturday: York : Taqdeyr and Biniou (Each Way) plus Monitor Closely (if rain stays away)

Ascot : Tartan Bearer

Redcar Off...Waterlogged!

Sunday's meeting at Redcar has been abandoned due to a waterlogged track.

Officials had planned a noon inspection following heavy rain on Friday but they brought forward that check due to an unfavourable forecast.

Acting clerk of the course John Sanderson said: "We are waterlogged in places and it hasn't really improved. We have had a little bit of rain and the forecast is such that the chances of improving sufficiently are remote, so we have abandoned."

I told you its been raining up here! Barry R

Geordieland...where next?

News From Jamie Osbornes` Yard in Hungerford.

Geordieland could reappear in the Weatherbys Insurance Lonsdale Cup at York on August 19 en route to the Breeders' Cup.

The Group Two contest over two miles fits in with trainer Jamie Osborne's plan to run the grey in the Breeders' Cup Marathon at Santa Anita on November 7.

"We've got two options at the moment. One would be to wait until the Doncaster Cup in September, the other alternative would be the Lonsdale at York on August 19 and that would be the favourite at the moment"

"That gives us just over a month, which should be fine. He's unlikely to do both those races. They are three weeks apart and I think he probably needs longer between races.

"If we went to York and that went well, I'd like to run him one time and I'd like that to be the Breeders' Cup Marathon.

"If we go to York it gives us a longer preparation time which would suit.

"He had two relatively quick races. He didn't have a hard race at Ascot, but at the same time it was quick enough after Sandown and the horse does a lot of work to lead up to his races so we let him down a little bit."

What A Saturday!

Fantastic information from the very grass roots of racing every day...have you joined yet?
Yankee Bet lined up for today...four over the sticks!

Borderlescott ran a belter, and landed a Huge gamble, here's what Robin Bastiman has to say after the race;

Robin Bastiman believes victory at Chester on Saturday will have done Borderlescott "the world of good" ahead of tougher assignments later on in the summer.

The popular sprinter got off the mark for the season with a one-length victory over Captain Gerrard in the Listed City Wall Stakes.

The seven-year-old stayed overnight in Chester before making the journey back to Bastiman's Wetherby base.

It is likely to be the Group Three Audi Stakes at Glorious Goodwood next for the seven-year-old followed by a bid to land back-to-back victories in the Group One Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes.

"That will have done him the world of good. He had no penalty for that race and he'll have no penalty for the Group Three at Goodwood next time," said Bastiman.

"I don't think he'll be running in the Stewards' Cup there.

"He'll go for the Nunthorpe then. Let's hope Fleeting Spirit (July Cup winner) will have an off-day!

"She's a good filly, but he'll run his race.

"The Nunthorpe's back at York, it's his base and he's won there a couple of times. We're looking forward to it, I just hope he stays OK."

Borderlescott (centre) wins at Chester

The durable Borderlescott overcame plenty of trouble in running to get off the mark for the campaign in the toteswinger City Wall Stakes at Chester.

Last year's Nunthorpe winner was sent off the 6-5 market leader after finishing fifth in the King's Stand at Royal Ascot.

But after bouncing out of the gates, he was soon shuffled back and stuck behind rivals.

Robin Bastiman's stable star was bumped before the turn for home but when the gap came in the straight, the seven-year-old knuckled down well to beat the fast-finishing Captain Gerrard by one length.

Bastiman said: "I keep telling everybody he only comes to himself in July and August.

"I know he's a year older, but the engine is still there.

"He'll go to Glorious Goodwood and, at this stage, I would say he'll go for the Group Three (Audi Stakes) as he'd have another 3lb penalty in the Stewards' Cup.

"Then we'll go to York for the Nunthorpe."

Winning jockey Pat Cosgrave added: "He's tough and genuine and I jumped nearly too good, really, as he likes to have something to tow him along for a while.

"I just slotted in on the fence and I took him back a bit further than I wanted because it was just getting so tight in there.

"I just accepted it as they were going quick and, thankfully, the gap was there for me in the straight."

TELEPHONE CUSTOMERS LAND 10/3 GAMBLE...

A great day on Saturday. Barry put up SECRET SOCIETY at Ascot (1.50). The result was...

1st 3 Secret Society 10-3
2nd 5 Suruor (IRE) 9-1
3rd 1 Khor Dubai (IRE) 12-1

Barry told you before the race, read what was reported after it....

Secret Society progressed from his second-place finish in the Britannia Stakes to be produced late by Jamie Spencer and claim the totescoop6 at Ascot.

Michael Bell's Exceed And Excel colt was beaten just a head at the Royal meeting, and scored by the same margin on his return to the Queen's racecourse.

The 100-30 chance travelled sweetly in the slipstream of Suruor, and despite taking a few seconds to find his stride, he led beneath the shadow of the post for a cheeky success.

"He lost two shoes before the race and another one during it. One of those pricked him slightly, so his turn of foot may not have been as quick as normal," said Spencer.

"I think that if I had played my cards later at Royal Ascot he may have won, but his turn of foot takes you there so quickly when he's against good opposition."

VC Bet trimmed the three-year-old to 12-1 for the totesport Mile at Glorious Goodwood, while William Hill were more impressed and go just 8-1.

William Haggas saddled Shamali to a resounding victory in the Euro Earthworks Handicap.

The four-year-old displayed the benefit of his previous two outings this year to steam past 3-1 favourite Mabuya at the one-furlong marker and cross the line nearly three lengths clear.

Haggas said of the 7-2 winner: "He was in an uncompromising position turning for home, but he has gone on and done it well.

"He has taken time to come to himself and is a big horse, but we have always thought he has ability."

Serious Attitude - won York feature.

THE STORY....You want to hear this BEFORE THE RACE- so Call BARRY!

Rae Guest's Serious Attitude, winner of the Cheveley Park Stakes last year, returned to winning form in the Cuisine De France Summer Stakes at York.

Unplaced in the 1000 Guineas when it was felt she failed to stay a mile, the 7-2 chance could take high rank now she is back sprinting.

Karl Burke's 5-2 favourite Lesson In Humility, third in the Golden Jubilee, made most of the running but was worn down in the closing stages by Eddie Ahern.

Look Busy was a distant third with Swiss Diva fourth.

Guest said: "We always knew she was a good horse, but it's difficult coming back as a three-year-old sprinter taking on older horses.

"We gave her a break after the Guineas, so she should come on a lot for that.

"We'll keep her sprinting now. Eddie (Ahern) says she'll get seven furlongs, but she's probably best over a stiff six.

"We'll now look at the Prix Maurice de Gheest (at Deauville) in August. That's six and a half furlongs, so it looks about right.

"She's definitely improving."

The Story...

Brian Meehan's Arcano maintained his unbeaten record with an impressive display in the TNT July Stakes.

The Oasis Dream colt was sent off the 7-4 favourite having won a strong maiden at Newbury on his debut and was always travelling well in the hands of Martin Dwyer.

Long-time leader Orpen Grey proved a tough nut to crack at the head of affairs, but Arcano scythed through the pack and wore him down to take the Group Two prize by three-quarters of a length.

Dwyer said: "I was very impressed, he did it well, I think he could be a proper horse.

"He's still a baby and I didn't want to get there too soon and be in front on my own because he is still learning.

"The Guineas is a long way off but there is no reason why he shouldn't stay a mile as he's pretty raw at the minute and he's nowhere near his best. He's got plenty of potential and plenty of scope."

Tom Dascombe said of the runner-up: "I'm thrilled, we were just beaten by a better horse.

"He'll go straight to Ireland now for the Tattersalls Million and I might bring him back for the Middle Park.

While Charlie Hills said of Red Jazz: "We are delighted. He finished well but could have been drawn a little better as he got stuck on the outside. The obvious race to go for is the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood."

GOLDIKOVA....what a great result...

Picture
Goldikova - back to winning form.

Barry Advised Goldikova at 2-1....

Freddie Head jumped back aboard the Group One bandwagon as Breeders' Cup heroine Goldikova returned to top form in the Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.

Last season was a blistering one for the French jockey-turned-trainer as he scooped eight Group One prizes around the world, including at this meeting as Marchand d'Or landed the Darley July Cup.

But 2009 has started slowly, with his stable stars - including Marchand d'Or, Goldikova and Naaqoos - all turned over during the early part of the campaign.

Goldikova herself could muster just a lowly seventh place in the Prix d'Ispahan in May, but looked a different beast at Headquarters as she raced home under Olivier Peslier as the 7-4 favourite.

Gallagher- Were You On?

Brian Meehan's Gallagher was an easy winner of the Sunley Conditions Stakes at Newbury under Martin Dwyer on Thursday evening.

The evens favourite was always travelling well in the slipstream of the front-running Plum Pudding and asserted himself in the closing stages to win by two lengths.

Picture
Gallagher - good winner at Newbury.

It was just the second win of the Bahamian Bounty colt's career after a host of placed efforts in Group company as a juvenile and a fourth place in the Jersey Stakes on his return at Royal Ascot.

Plum Pudding held on for second, with Khor Dubai staying on for third.

The Betfair Cup at Glorious Goodwood could be the winner's next assignment, with trainer Meehan saying afterwards: "It's nice to get him winning, he won it the way he should've won it.

"He'll go straight in at the deep end now, maybe the Lennox (Betfair Cup) at Goodwood."
