Nick Mitchell Will STILL Be Celebrating!

The Listener provided Nick Mitchell with the biggest win of his training career to date with a superb all-the-way victory in the JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal.

Andrew McNamara set only a sedate pace in the early stages on the 7-1 chance due to the testing conditions, but he was joined at halfway by the odds-on favourite Notre Pere, who took a crashing fall five out.

Former Gold Cup winner War Of Attrition and fellow British raiders Joe Lively and My Will tried to get involved, but the bold-jumping mud-lover refused to buckle and came home in splendid isolation, 15 lengths clear.

Mitchell said: "I wouldn't be here without this horse, training or anything. I would like to thank the owner for keeping him with me throughout a difficult year last year.

"He started to get some sort of form back at Punchestown, then he had a nasty fall at Leopardstown and was never quite right after that.

"Andrew came to ride him 10 days ago and said he hoped it would be heavy ground as we would see a different horse on that surface.

"That's the horse's fourth Grade One win over here. He'll probably come back for the John Durkan at Punchestown in December."

McNamara capped a fine day by completing a double on Edward O'Grady's Jack Finch in the Rainbow Telecom Handicap Chase, while Mitchell was on target with Ellerslie George in the Badger Ales Trophy at Wincanton.

Northern Owner Buys BIG!

Eddie Stobart chief executive officer Andrew Tinkler took his ownership in horseracing to a new level when splashing out 400,000 guineas for the Sir Mark Prescott-trained Royal Diamond at the Tattersalls Horses-in-Training sale on Tuesday evening.

Cumbria-based Tinkler stood alongside Darlington trainer Michael Dods and was forced to keep bidding to see off the attentions of the big-spending Howard Johnson.

Tinkler only came into horse ownership two years ago and now has close on 20 horses in his care.

Tinkler said: "I went to Sir Mark Prescott's yard to have a look at him and I fell in love with him. He hasn't fully matured yet."

Dods added: "He won't go jumping for us and he's a proper horse who has done everything right.

"We'll put him away now and bring him back next summer. Andrew would love to go for the Northumberland Plate, and the Ebor would also be an option next summer."

Double Ouch!

Campbell Gillies had to be taken to hospital after a sickening incident at Aintree.

The conditional jockey, who is based at Kinross with Lucinda Russell, was in with a fighting chance aboard Lie Forrit approaching the second-last flight of the Liverpool Volkswagen Handicap Hurdle.

However, the saddle slipped before the hurdle and Gillies came off. He got up quickly and walked across towards the rails, but Risk Runner crashed into the young jockey and was brought down himself.

Russell reported: "He has got broken ribs and will be a bit concussed, but his internal organs are OK."

The race went to John Quinn's Spring Breeze (15-2).

Denis O'Regan was also in the wars as he came off Astarador at the second fence in the Radio City 96.7 Handicap Chase and had to be treated for some time.

Owner Graham Wylie reported: "I am going to see him in hospital, but we don't know what's happened.

"I am told he has either damaged his shoulder, his collarbone or neither."

Ouch!...Second, but...

Connections of the placed horses in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster were full of praise for the runaway winner St Nicholas Abbey.

Elusive Pimpernel ...my selection... finished clear of the rest in second and though he lost his unbeaten record in the process, John Dunlop was far from disconsolate.

The trainer said: "He has run a cracking race and I think it will prove no disgrace to have been beaten by that winner."

He added: "You have to be very pleased with that, although I suppose I could be more pleased, but there you go."

Godolphin's Simon Crisford said of third home Al Zir: "He has run very well and there are no excuses. The winner looked very special and we are going to look forward to next year now.

"He will be a mile-and-a-quarter horse next season, although he may stay a bit further. I think he is a horse who needs a winter on his back."

Marking Your Card For Saturday

John Best would like to give his new star Inler another quick run this weekend provided the ground does not deteriorate too much.

The juvenile provided a nice result for his high-staking owner Harry Findlay when he pulled clear on his debut at Newmarket last week, and has bounced out of the race so well he could go in either the Listed racingpostpoker Stakes at Doncaster or the Group Three totescoop6 Stakes (Horris Hill) at Newbury.

Best said: "I am going to talk to Harry Findlay and then make a decision. He has two options and where he would go really depends on the weather at each place."

He added: "We have had quite a lot of rain here (in Kent). He might go on soft ground, we don't know, but I don't want to give him a really hard race at this stage.

"I think if it is good to soft at one of the tracks, he will probably run, as I would like him to have more experience. I think he needs it mentally."

Racing Post Trophy...get on Eddies "Each Way" NOW!

St Nicholas Abbey and Coordinated Cut are among 22 runners remaining in a strong line-up for the Racing Post Trophy after the five-day declaration stage.

The final Group One contest of the British season at Doncaster on Saturday often has a major bearing on the following year's Classics.

Both Aidan O'Brien's St Nicholas Abbey and Peter Chapple-Hyam's Coordinated Cut are at the top of the Derby betting after impressive wins.

O'Brien could also run Air Chief Marshal, Jan Vermeer, Joshua Tree, Midas Touch or Utrillo, while Chapple-Hyam has another string to his bow through Morana.

Godolphin's well-regarded Al Zir and John Dunlop's Elusive Pimpernel also feature.

Eddie Ahern rides Elusive Pimpernel and he said "The vibes are good and I hear he is in good form. Aidan has a few in the there and St Nicholas Abbey is favourite for the Derby, so it is a hot contest.

"My horse is a lovely, big horse and he's done nothing but improve. I think they will get cut in the ground, which I think is what he needs.

"Mr Dunlop never rushes his horses, they don't run until they are ready for a run. I was told he was one of the best two-year-olds in the yard before and that is how it has turned out."

David Williams, the clerk of the course at Town Moor, said: "I have left it at good ground at the moment. The forecast this weekend is very unsettled and there is a band of rain set to come in. But forecasts do change all the time."

Off To Ponte` Tomorrow...see some of you there maybe?

Hopes are high that Hot Prospect can give the Michael Jarvis stable back-to-back victories in the totepool Silver Tankard at Pontefract tomorrow.

Odds-on shot Playfellow beat three rivals 12 months ago, but Hot Prospect faces a tougher task in this Listed race over a mile.

His form in both his maidens looks solid and he reappears on the back of a victory at Sandown five weeks ago, since when runner-up Morana has grabbed Listed success at Ascot.

"His form looks good. Both maidens he's run in are working out. He's in good form and we're happy with him. We are hoping he'll run a big race," said Jarvis's assistant Roger Varian.

"The draw (nine) shouldn't be too bad as they've got time to sort themselves out. It's a nice race and a fair track that suits a galloping horse. We've had some success in the race before and we hope Hot Prospect can carry that on."

Art Excellence takes the step up from winning a Kempton maiden, but his trainer Simon Callaghan feels he will not be disgraced.

"It's a step up from his last race to a competitive Listed race," said the Newmarket trainer. "He's got a good draw (one) and he will appreciate the ground - to get a place would be a good result for us.

"At Kempton last time he was drawn wide and we had to make a lot of use of him, so it was probably quite a good performance to win from there. We're hopeful, but we're realistic."

Trainer Tom Dascombe has warned his smart maiden Party Doctor will only run if the ground is suitable.

Cesarewitch Preview

David Simcock admits leading fancy Darley Sun is facing an uphill battle in Saturday's totesport.com Cesarewitch at Newmarket.

The lightly-weighted three-year-old is now guaranteed a run in the handicap feature after a number of withdrawals at the five-day stage left him 31st in a list of 34 permitted runners.

However, the last three-year-old Cesarewitch winner was Spirit Of Love in 1998 and though Simcock's charge is favourite after his Doncaster Cup second, the trainer is wary.

He said: "Of course we were pleased to see him get in the race. He worked on Saturday over a mile on the peat moss gallop on Racecourse Side and will have another blow on Wednesday, but he's in very good order and I am very happy with him.

"The ground is no problem and it will be perfect for him on Saturday. Andrea Atzeni will ride him and will come and have his first sit on the horse on Thursday.

"We will go into it very hopeful but, realistically, it has been a long time since a three-year-old has won this race - they don't have a great record.

"Of course the Doncaster run has given us grounds for optimism and he is a progressive horse who stays very well, but his profile is very similar to that of Askar Tau, who finished fourth as a three-year-old in last year's Cesarewitch."

There are 48 horses still vying for a run, with other major contenders still engaged including the Clive Cox-trained Electrolyser and John Dunlop's Swingkeel. Andrew Turnell's Blue Bajan is top-weight on 9st 11lb.

Richard Fahey has dominated proceedings at York all year and signed off the season in style with a treble on the Knavesmire.

The Musley Bank handler was confirmed as the top trainer at York before the day even began as he had saddled 11 winners at the track - compared with eight from nearest rival Saeed bin Suroor, who had just one runner on the card.

Although boasting an unassailable lead, Fahey sent a strong team to York's finale and Kaldoun Kingdom's success in the feature Coral Sprint Trophy was ably supplemented by Starla Dancer and Trip The Light.

Fahey said: "Three winners on the Knavesmire is always good at any time but to do it now is fantastic. It just keeps on getting better and better and better. It's (the York title) a thing I target every year and I'm sure we'll try again.

"I love this place and the owners love it here. It's just unbelievable. We can't believe how well it (the season) has gone. When we started off this year you're always hoping to beat your score of last season.

"The horses that did well for us last year have been doing it for us again this time - and long may it continue."

Kaldoun Kingdom was bagging a second high-profile success in the six-furlong highlight, running out a length-and-three-quarter victor under Barry McHugh to add to his Ayr Silver Cup triumph.

Fahey said: "He's been running on fast ground all year and he loves York. He's a fair little horse with a bit of juice in the ground.

"He's been running blinders on fast ground but he needs juice in the ground and six furlongs. He's getting a bit colty so I'm going to have him gelded. It's brilliant for the owner (Phil Smith). He's local and loves having winners at the course."

The Paul Hanagan-ridden Starla Dancer posted a 20-1 surprise as she broke her duck in the Play Jeff Or Ref At Coral Stakes Handicap and Fahey rounded off a super campaign on the Knavesmire as Trip The Light (10-1) ran on again once headed for Hanagan to edge out Snoqualmie Boy.

Punters Clean Up on a Very Good Friday

Punters had a field day at York with Barry advising FELDAY at York at an early price of 8/1 - the horse won EASY and was returned at 11/2

1st 10 Felday 11-2 F

2nd 17 Balata 20-1
3rd 6 Kiwi Bay 14-1
4th 9 Medicean Man 13-2

One punter emailed the office to say;
"thankyou very much m8.u won me loads.thankyou and thankyou again:)"
The winning did not stop there though...

Our late information service sent a text to advise that Sahara Kingdom was strongly fancied to win first time out at Lingfield. Despite missing the break he came from last to first to win going away - punted from 2/1 to win at 6/4. The full result;

1st 11 Sahara Kingdom (IRE) 6-4 F
2nd 4 Essexbridge 4-1
3rd 10 Round Won (USA) 12-1

There's more...Barry suggested that Lemon N Sugar at Lingfield was well worth a punt, and thus it proved as the hat-trick was landed with an easy win, at a decent price. Punted from 4/1 Lemon N Sugar bolted up.

1st 9 Lemon N Sugar (USA) 2-1 F
2nd 4 Masamah (IRE) 12-1

Fallon Praying For Rain...me too!

Michael Bell has snapped up Kieren Fallon to ride Sariska in the Emirates Airlines Champion Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday week.

The dual Oaks winner is usually partnered by Jamie Spencer but he is suspended for the Group One feature over 10 furlongs.

"Jamie Spencer is suspended so I had a look at the ones who were available. A couple had already got rides and obviously a lot of people would like to ride her, but Kieren is top-class and we're happy to have him. He'll ride her in a piece of work (on Wednesday)," said Bell.

Sariska bypassed the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe due to quick ground and she is set to have her first start at Newmarket since suffering a shock defeat in the Yorkshire Oaks in August.

Bell later reported the Pivotal filly to have come into season prior to the race and she is a 5-1 chance with both Paddy Power and Stan James to bounce back to form at Headquarters.

Sariska needs it soft...pulverised them at The Curragh in the heavy going...Fallon will be praying for rain as well as me...get on NOW! Barry R

News From Wetherby

Robin Bastiman has yet to decide whether Borderlescott will run again this year after his unlucky trip in the Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp.

The dual Nunthorpe Stakes hero failed to find a clear passage inside the final furlong which took him out of the money into sixth place behind Total Gallery.

"He was a bit unlucky. The gap closed at the wrong time for him, otherwise he would have been placed and he might even have won," said the Wetherby trainer.

"That's him but there was no inquiry, it was just one of those things. It was the luck of the draw and he was just unfortunate not to get any prize money.

"There was only 100 yards to go and he was in third place. The gap closed, his momentum was gone and it finished his run off. Never mind he's come back OK and we live to fight another day.

"We don't know if he'll run again this year. We'll see how he is over the next week and then make a decision what we do depending on the ground and everything.

"He'll go again next year no doubt. He's won two Group Ones and he's a gelding."

Cambridgeshire Report...nice one Hughie

Supaseus made almost every yard of the running in a thrilling renewal of the totesport.com Cambridgeshire at Newmarket.

Hughie Morrison's six-year-old was sent off at 16-1 having failed to get his head in front since last year's Royal Ascot meeting, but Travis Block bounced him out of the stalls and he was soon at the head of affairs.

Tartan Gigha came out of the pack to throw down a strong challenge for in-form trainer Mark Johnston but Supaseus kept sticking his neck out and passed the post just a nose ahead. Nanton was third, with Applause fourth.

Block said: "Mr Morrison said if we got an easy lead we were happy enough to break. All credit to Mr Morrison for getting this horse back and I'm just thankful I got the ride on him today. Driving here today I thought he doesn't feel like a horse who is fast enough to make it in the Cambridgeshire."

Morrison added: "After he ran in Dubai earlier this year I wasn't sure we'd ever get him back to the horse he used to be. With these big horses it takes a run or two to get them back and it was always the plan to make the running, but I have to say Travis gave him an absolute peach."

"I thought we had been caught and I was so gloomy after Pastoral Player wouldn't go in the stalls at Redcar - it just shows you how things can change so rapidly in this game."

Johnston said: "All mine have run well today, but it has been very frustrating not to have had a winner. Mind you we have probably made more money than from winning 36 all-weather races! Tartan Gigha has kept his form very well. I didn't think he had won from my position, but he was getting there."

Of Nanton, trainer Jim Goldie said: "I think he has been placed in every big handicap there is. I probably won't run him in the Cesarewitch now, but you never know. Otherwise I will probably save him for Dubai."
