Varian Has Perfect Start

Roger Varian made the perfect start to his training career when Eton Forever ran out an impressive winner of the William Hill Spring Mile at Doncaster.

After taking over the reins from Michael Jarvis at Kremlin House Stables in Newmarket, Varian had saddled Laaheb to finish fourth in the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan last Saturday, but Eton Forever (10-1) gave him a fairytale victory on home ground.

Unexposed after just four starts last season, the four-year-old stormed away from the opposition in the final furlong after taking over from course specialist Manassas.

With high numbers having a definite edge, it was Eton Forever (drawn 16) who won by three and three-quarter lengths from Dance And Dance (19), with Manassas (22) third and Justonefortheroad (10) doing best of the lower section in fourth.

"It's the perfect way to get going. I'm so happy and I've got a lot of people to thank, mainly Michael Jarvis and his family and all the owners who have supported him and now support me, and the winning owner today," said Varian.

"Without them I wouldn't be here taking the plaudits as a trainer. I've been so lucky to start my career in such a privileged position and with such a great team.

"I haven't set myself any targets and I wouldn't want any target to alter anything.

"This is a horse we have always liked. His form was good and he had been working well. He hadn't raced since July so while we were happy with him we weren't quite sure if he was ready."
